To grow up with the dynamics of loss, be it from living with addiction, violence or simply unavailable parents, creates a legacy of internalized toxic shame. In this seminar you will garner the distinction between embarrassment, guilt and shame that offers an understanding for differences in self esteem. Claudia Black, Ph.D. will discuss the creation of internalized toxic shame in response to growing up with loss conditions providing direction for both prevention and therapy modalities. She will then present her concept of the shame genogram. Using client stories, she will describe a combination of disconnection strategies, ranging from control issues and rage, to victimization, perfectionism and addictive disorders.
